PoC vs MVP for AI: the right outcome and how to measure impact

A PoC proves technical feasibility. An MVP must run inside a real process. How to set goals, baseline and leadership reporting.

PoC and MVP often get mixed up in AI initiatives — and then a PoC turns into an endless demo.

PoC (Proof of Concept)

Goal: prove it works technically. Typically:

  • data access and preparation,
  • integrations,
  • quality evaluation,
  • key risks.

MVP (Minimum Viable Product)

Goal: run inside a real business process. Typically:

  • workflow and exception handling,
  • roles and access,
  • monitoring,
  • impact measurement.

What leadership wants to see

  • baseline vs after-change,
  • a clear metric (time, cost, conversion, quality),
  • a scaling plan and risk controls.

A good starting point is the AI implementation (30/60/90 days) delivery framework.
